The Problem

Lawmakers in Boston have passed the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 state budget, which includes Section 78, a provision that could mandate an auto body labor rate in our state, likely increasing auto repair costs, which could impact insurance rates.

Why It Matters

According to industry estimates, for every $10 in additional labor rate, it could cost policyholders approximately $38 per vehicle. This will damage Massachusetts competitiveness by adding to the state’s already high costs of living.

No other state mandates a labor rate and no other industry has its compensation set by the government in this way. This proposal undermines fundamental principles of a market-based economy to increase body shop profits.

What Needs to Happen

This is an unacceptable mandate and does not work for auto insurance consumers and insurers alike. We need you to raise your voice and urge Governor Healey to strike this provision from the FY 2027 state budget.
